The Galapagos Islands
Overview
The Galápagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, are one of the world’s foremost destinations for wildlife viewing. Located about 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, these islands and the surrounding marine reserve have been called a unique “living museum and showcase of evolution.” The islands’ isolation has allowed a diversity of plant and animal species to evolve, many found nowhere else on Earth. Charles Darwin famously observed this, which contributed to the inception of his theory of natural selection.
Each island boasts its unique landscape, ranging from barren black, volcanic rocks to beaches of white sand framed by crystal-clear waters. The Galápagos are home to fascinating species, including the giant tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galápagos penguin—the only penguin species found north of the equator.
Visitors can explore the islands through guided tours, often arriving by boat. Snorkeling and diving in the Galápagos offer encounters with rich marine life, including sea lions, sharks, whales, and a colorful array of fish and corals.

Isabela Island:
The largest island in the archipelago, Isabela offers a diverse range of habitats, including volcanoes, wetlands, and beaches. Visitors can hike the Sierra Negra volcano, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Los Tuneles—a haven for sea turtles, sharks, and rays—or explore the mangroves by kayak. The island’s size and diversity make it a microcosm of the entire archipelago.
Santa Cruz Island:
As the central hub for tourism in the Galápagos, Santa Cruz is home to the Charles Darwin Research Station, where visitors can learn about conservation efforts and see giant tortoises up close. The island also boasts beautiful beaches, like Tortuga Bay, and the highlands offer opportunities to observe wild tortoises in their natural habitat.
San Cristobal Island:
The island where Charles Darwin first landed, San Cristobal is rich in history and biodiversity. It’s home to the Galápagos’ capital, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and offers excellent surfing, snorkeling, and diving spots. Visitors can hike to El Junco Lagoon, the only freshwater lake in the archipelago, or observe sea lions at La Loberia.
Floreana Island:
Known for its colorful history involving pirates, whalers, and early settlers, Floreana offers an intriguing human history to complement its natural beauty. Snorkel at Devil’s Crown, a submerged volcano teeming with marine life, or visit Post Office Bay, where 18th-century whalers used a barrel as an unofficial mail drop, a tradition that continues today.
Española Island:
This is the oldest and one of the most isolated islands, resulting in a high number of endemic species. It’s the only nesting site for the world’s entire population of waved albatrosses (April to December). Gardner Bay provides a stunning beach for relaxation and wildlife observation, including sea lions and Española mockingbirds.
Genovesa Island:
Often called “Bird Island,” Genovesa is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. This horseshoe-shaped island is home to thousands of birds, including frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, and storm petrels. Visitors can climb Prince Philip’s Steps, a steep path leading up a cliff face, to reach a plateau rich in birdlife. The island’s Darwin Bay also offers excellent snorkeling opportunities to explore beneath the waves.
Fernandina Island:
As one of the most pristine ecosystems in the world, Fernandina is the youngest and westernmost island in the Galápagos. It’s known for its unique lava formations and is home to the largest colony of marine iguanas. The island’s Punta Espinosa is a narrow spit of land where visitors can observe a variety of species, including flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, and the occasional Galápagos hawk.
Santiago Island:
Santiago offers a diverse landscape of beaches, lava flows, and tuff cones. At Sullivan Bay, visitors can walk on a vast pahoehoe lava flow, one of the most incredible volcanic landscapes in the Galápagos. The island is also known for its snorkeling sites, where you might swim alongside sea turtles, Galápagos sharks, and moray eels. The fur seal grottos near Puerto Egas offer a chance to see these creatures up close.
Bartolomé Island:
Known for its iconic Pinnacle Rock, Bartolomé is one of the most photographed places in the Galápagos. A climb to the island’s summit offers breathtaking views of the surrounding islands. The waters around Bartolomé are crystal clear, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling with colorful tropical fish and perhaps even Galápagos penguins. The beaches here are also nesting grounds for green turtles.
North Seymour Island:
This relatively flat island was uplifted from the sea floor by a seismic event, and it teems with life. It’s an excellent spot to see frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies performing their mating dances. Land iguanas and sea lions are also common sights. North Seymour is particularly favored for its accessibility and the abundance of wildlife visible even on short visits.
