- Tips
Day 1: Mukambi Safari Lodge
Your Kafue National Park safari tour begins at the Mukambi Safari Lodge.
Guests are typically brought in from Lusaka by car, thanks to our friendly driver Jabes Mvula. Others may opt to charter a flight to the Chunga Airport and then transfer to a car for the 30-minute ride to the lodge.
A tour briefing is held before lunch is served between 12:00 and 14:00. After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to check into your room and settle in before afternoon tea (at approximately 15:30) before the evening activity—either a sunset cruise or a game drive.
Finally, dinner is served between 19:00 and 22:00, or otherwise following the evening activity.
Day 2: Mukambi Safari Lodge to Fig Tree Bush Camp
The second day of your safari tour starts with a morning activity at the Mukambi Safari Lodge. Activities include an early-morning game drive, walking safari or fishing. Please keep in mind, however, that these activities start quite early in the morning.
Following lunch at the Mukambi Safari Lodge, you’ll set out for the Fig Tree Bush Camp. Depending on morning activity, guests also have the option to transfer to the bush camp via a morning game drive and have lunch at the Fig Tree Bush Camp. The game drive is approximately five hours.
Late afternoon tea is served at 15:30, right before the evening game drive.
Finally, day two is capped off with dinner back at the Fig Tree Bush Camp.
Day 3: Fig Tree Bush Camp
Day three starts bright and early with a light breakfast at the Fig Tree Bush Camp before setting out for the morning activity—either a walking safari or a game drive.
Lunch is served upon returning from your morning activity, followed by an opportunity to relax and spend some time relaxing. The camp features a sandy beach with a hammock overlooking the Shishamba Lagoon. There’s also a raised infinity pool that overlooks the plains, with a watering hole right in front of the pool that attracts a variety of wildlife looking for a place to have a little drink and cool down.
Late-afternoon tea is served at 15:30, and then you’ll embark on your evening activity—a game drive.
Dinner is served following your return from the game drive.
Day 4: Fig Tree Bush Camp to Busanga Plains Camp
The fourth day of your safari tour begins bright and early with a 06:00 transfer from the Fig Tree Bush Camp to the Busanga Plains Camp. A light breakfast is served prior to departure, with an additional packed breakfast that you’ll bring along on the transfer.
The drive between camps takes about five hours and doubles as a game drive. Your guide will stop midway through for a break and a chance for guests to have their packed breakfasts.
Once you arrive at the Busanga Plains Camp, you’ll have a chance to enjoy some lunch before checking into your room and settling in at camp.
Late-afternoon tea is at 15:30, followed by an evening game drive.
Dinner is served following the game drive.
Day 5: Busanga Plains camp
Morning game drives at the Busanga Plains Camp aren’t nearly as early as they are at the Fig Tree Bush Camp or Mukambi Safari Lodge. Following your morning wake-up call, you’ll have plenty of time to freshen up before having a light breakfast and then heading out for a morning activity—either a walking safari or game drive.
Brunch is served back at the camp. Afterward, you’ll have a chance to relax around the premises. Both a viewing deck and swimming pool are available for your enjoyment.
Late-afternoon tea is at 15:30, followed by an evening game drive.
Dinner is served upon your return to the Busanga Plains Camp.
Day 6: Busanga Plains camp
Your last full day at the Busanga Plains Camp starts with a light breakfast before setting out for either a walking safari or a game drive. Brunch is served upon returning from the morning activity, followed by some time to relax and unwind ahead of the evening activity.
Late-afternoon tea is at 15:30. You’ll then set out for one final game drive on the Busanga Plains. Dinner is served once you return to camp.
As this will be your last night at the camp, you’ll have a chance to spend the night under the stars on the Star Bed. Arrangements for this can be made with your camp manager.
Day 7: Busanga Plains Camp to Mukambi Safari Lodge
The penultimate day of your safari tour begins with a 06:00 transfer from the Busanga Plains Camp back to the Mukambi Safari Lodge. After you check into your room, lunch will be served between 12:00 and 14:00.
Late-afternoon tea is at 15:30, followed by one last evening activity—either a game drive or a boat cruise.
The day concludes with dinner from 19:00 to 22:00, or upon returning from your evening activity.
Day 8: Mukambi Safari Lodge to Lusaka
The final day of your Kafue National Park safari tour begins at the Mukambi Safari Lodge with breakfast and one final morning activity, followed by your return trip to Lusaka.
Please note that transfers between the Mukambi Safari Lodge and Lusaka are not part of the tour package and must be booked separately.

What insurance do I need for rafting?
Is there an age restriction?
The minimum age is 15 years old regardless of body size or swimming capability. The maximum age limit is dependent on the individual’s general state of health and physical fitness.
I’ve never been rafting before. Can I join a trip?
No previous rafting experience is required if good swimming skills are combined with a “GO FOR IT” attitude. A reasonable level of fitness is required as clients must negotiate a steep path in and out of the gorge. The walk out is 750 vertical feet up a gradient of 1 in 3, and a person of average fitness can manage this in approximately 20 minutes.
Are your rafts safe?
We uses some of the finest equipment on the market to ensure that the trip is a safe and enjoyable one. Rafts are purchased from Ark in South Africa and are tried, and tested river rafts required for the Zambezi River. We only uses ‘high flotation life jackets’ and Protec designed safety helmets which are issued to clients before the day’s rafting.
Please tell me more about your guides & river safety?
Nature Horizons is one of the company on the Zambezi with a 100% guide certification under the International Rafting Federation. All guides are fully trained professionals and hold valid advanced first aid certificates. A comprehensive first aid kit and skid stretcher is carried on each trip. Each client is required to sign the Safari Par Excellence White Water Rafting Indemnity Form prior to departure. Each trip leader carries a SAT phone and is in radio contact with our base in Livingstone, Zambia and covered by S.E.S (Specialty Emergency Services) based in Livingstone. Our guide team also hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support qualifications and we have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on every trip. Whilst every precaution is taken, it is essential that clients are aware that there is a risk of injury associated with the activity of rafting on the Zambezi – the Zambezi is a Class V river – the highest level of commercially available rafting in the world. White water rafting is an extreme sport.

Others tips
- Bring soft luggage such as a duffel bag, hiking pack or sports bag. These are ideal for packing into a safari vehicle. Hard suitcases can often be difficult to fit into the vehicles.
- Bring a backpack to carry all of your important items including travel documents, money, camera, medication etc. You should keep this backpack with you at all times.
- Keep luxury items such as hair dryers/ straighteners, expensive jewellery, make up and bulky toiletries to an absolute minimum. If in doubt, leave them out.
- If you plan to bring cash, divide it into different areas of your carry-on luggage, wallet and money belt just in case something happens to one of those carry items.
- Leave some space in your luggage for the all-important souvenirs that you will probably buy. There are places where you can send packages home via DHL etc, however this can sometimes be an expensive option.
