If you’re planning on trekking in Nepal, here is a short compilation of the best seasons to do it in.
First, decide which season is the best season for you.
You can hike throughout Nepal in almost all seasons, except the rainy season, but that is still doable on certain routes.
Trekking seasons
December – February: Expect cold temperatures, well below zero degrees sometimes, as well as snowy trails during this season. The months from December to February are usually off-season, so you will not encounter many trekkers along the trail. The months offer clear, undisturbed blue skies with jaw-dropping views of the lofty mountains. Tea-house lodges operate with basic amenities compared to peak seasons, so be prepared for a frugal lifestyle.
February – April: The start of the spring season is one of the best seasons for trekking. The weather is usually dry, which means less chance of having your flights delayed. It is also the start of the climbing season, so trekking routes like Everest Base Camp will be super busy. But compared to autumn, there are fewer crowds on the trekking routes. Spring also means flowers, and Nepal has a wealth of floral diversity. Trekking along the way you will be greeted with a burst of colors, from bright blooming rhododendrons along the forest routes to beautiful wildflowers in the grassy lands.
May – June: It gets very hot during May and June and is not the best time to trek in the higher altitudes. However, if you enjoy the countryside and walking through lush green hills, the routes from May to June aren’t that bad.
June – September: The rainy season, or monsoon season. This is the least popular time for trekking in Nepal. The skies are covered with dark clouds, and the constant downpour makes the visibility of the mountains almost zero. Not all routes are accessible during a monsoon, except a few like the Mardi Himal Trek. However, it is impossible to guarantee that you will see the mountains during this season, as they will be hidden behind a veil of dark clouds.
October – November: The busiest trekking season in Nepal. The weather is perfect during October and November with clear skies and warm weather during the evening, making your trekking experience comfortable. The clear skies offer beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas. The routes are bustling, so you will have to plan well in advance.
