Overview
The Choquequirao tour is a new alternative trek in the mountains of Cusco. Choquequirao is located in the middle of the Vilcabamba mountain range with its 5,000-meter-high glaciers and the Apurimac River Canyon at 1,500 meters above sea level. It was recently nominated by the travel magazine Lonely Planet as one of the best tourist destinations in Peru.

DAY 1: CUSCO – CAPULIYOC – SANTA ROSA
We will pick you up bright and early at 4 am from your hotel. Then we will begin our three-hour drive to Cachora before continuing on to Capuliyoc (3,000 masl), where we will have our breakfast; it will also be the beginning of our trek. Here we will meet all the team that will accompany us on the trek (muleteers and horses). From Capuliyoc, we will have the first view of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao from a distance. We will begin to descend the mountain for 2½ hours along a winding road. We will pass through several small towns such as Cocamasana and Chiquisca (1,800 masl). At this last point, it will be lunch time and then we will continue our walk to the Apurimac River and cross the Rosalina Beach (1,500 meters above sea level). Then we will begin to climb uphill for 2½ hours on average until we reach Santa Rosa, our first camp.

DAY 2: SANTA ROSA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO
Today will be a day full of adrenalin as we ascend to the Incan city of Choquequirao, after a very energetic breakfast at 6:00 a.m. We will begin our trek to Marampata (3,050 masl), with 3 hours of climbing along a narrow road. During our tour, we will observe the dense vegetation of the tropical rainforest and different species of orchids until we reach Marampata, where we will take a short break. We will continue the two-hour walk until we reach the archaeological park of Choquequirao. We will visit the different sections within Choquequirao, such as the temples in the first part. In the second part, we will arrive at the ceremonial centers. At 4 o’clock, if we are lucky, we can see the Andean condor flying while the sun is setting in the mountains. At the end of the visit to the different areas, we will begin the walk back to the camp in Choquequirao.

DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO –SANTA ROSA– CHIQUISCA.
Very early, we will have our breakfast in Choquequirao where we will watch the sunrise and the flight of the condors. After exploring the waterfall and the temple of the water, we will begin to return to Marampata (3,050 masl), where we will rest and eat lunch. We will continue with our two hours of walking downhill to the beach of Rosalina and then 40 minutes more until we reach our third campsite at the hamlet of Chiquisca.

DAY 4: CHIQUISCA – CAPULIYOC – CUSCO.
On this last day of trekking, we will have an exquisite breakfast very early at 5 am, and then we will start with the four-hour hike through the mountain to the Capuliyoc pass. On the way, we can appreciate the Apurimac canyon again. If we are lucky, we will observe Andean condors in the high parts of the mountains. In Capuliyoc, we will have our last lunch of the tour. Then we will take our tourist transport to return to Cusco where you can rest in your hotel. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

We visited and stayed across Moshi (Mt. Kilimanjaro area), the North & Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Maynara, nKomazi Black Rhino Sanctuary, Tarangire and probably a few other places I can't recall. We stayed at tented temporary camps to luxury camps. We stayed at Weru Weru lodge, Serengeti Heritage lodge, Central Serengeti Luxury camp, Rhino Lodge, Lake Maynara Safari Lodge and finally at Kilimanjaro Luxury camp. These venues each had their own beauty with furnishings, mosquito nets, traditional African tribal entertainment, good food and amazing staff who catered to our every need and comfort. Even in the bush, we still had access to electricity, hot water, bottled water, showers, toilets and yes of course, the internet but you have to be realistic since the bush is the bush with hyenas, big cats and elephants moving around the property. I really loved the Masai warriors who made us feel safe as they escorted back and forth between tents and the main camp. We were so blessed to experience the BIG 5 largely due to the expertise of our guides Praygod and Victor. They were the best and boy did they make the trip. I was grateful for their knowledge of the terrain, their respect for the wildlife, education and tolerating our 1000s of questions. We had 3 couples plus the owner operator Dominick and we rotated across 2 Land Cruisers. I wouldn't have it any other way, I never felt cramped and being able to pop my head up in the open roof was great for photos and viewing the animals with my binoculars. This was a once in a life time trip that I highly recommend to anyone that has grown up watching animal planet and national geographic as a kids. When you see these animals only feet away from you, the kid in you returns and you will definitely cry at the beauty of these animals in their natural habitat. I highly recommend Nature Horizons since they are well connected across the different operators and local partners. They lodging was great and it provided a little bit of raw nature in the bush, feeling like a roughed it a bit (but not really) to the beauty Kilimanjaro luxury camp the last 2 nights to be at the foot of Kilimanjaro, and being able to see her greatness above the clouds. I have been back a month and I can't stop talking about my experience in Tanzania. I was able to experience the beauty of the people of Tanzania, an actual Masai village, shopping at the awesome African Galleria, and getting souvenir's at the cool places our guides felt were respectable locations for tourists. These examples are merely a glimpse of memories we made. And, part of the reason these moments were so special was because we were in the moment, which was as Nature Horizons intended.
