The Basantapur Durbar Square consists of temples and infrastructure surrounded by a plethora of old temples, monuments, statues, and courtyards. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, one of the oldest palaces in Kathmandu, was erected during the Malla and Shah dynasties and is a major feature on the Kathmandu City Tour. The Durbar Square is also home to the “living Goddess” Kumari.

Pashupatinath Temple

Considered to be one of the most holiest sites for Hindus. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pashupatinath temple is located on the river banks of Bagamati. The 5th-century temple is one of Asia’s most important Shiva Pilgrimage sites.

The Pashupatinath Temple is surrounded by stone and wooden sculpted temples. You will also see tantrics, gurus, who come to pray at the temple. Many ashrams, i.e hermitages, are established around the temple area.

On a daily basis, many Hindu rites of birth and death are carried out on its riverbank. The Ceremony of Light conducted at night is one such rite that you should definitely attend.

Funeral rites, as per the Hindu customs, are carried out on the riverbanks of Bagmati. You can observe the rites from the opposite side of the bank.

While it is an opportunity to learn about another culture and religion, you have to remember to be respectful toward the culture.

Boudhanath

Also a UNESCO heritage site, Boudanath receives visitors and Buddhist pilgrimages from all over the world. Built between 590 and 604 CE, the Boudhanath Stupa is also referred to as the center of Tibetan Buddhism.

One of the unique features of this stupa is its features. Designed as a mandala, the stupa is divided into many sections which reflect the various aspects of Buddhism.

While you are at Buddha, be sure to circumambulate the stupa lined with prayer wheels. You can also light the butter lamps placed at the metal stands in front of the stupa.

The entire area encompassing the stupa is lively with the many cafes, curio shops,  and shops selling incense sticks and prayer flags. Be sure to check them out! The local restaurants are also a must-visit. You should try the buttermilk and traditional sweet Khapse when you’re there.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Bhaktapur Durbar Square, or Khwopa Layaku, is a  UNESCO heritage site. It is 13 km to the east of Kathmandu. Dating back to the 12th century, Bhaktapur served as the capital of the Malla dynasty until the 15th century when the kingdom was divided into three parts. Bhaktapur Durbar Square complex in comparison to Basantapur is bigger and has four distinct squares: Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square, and Pottery Square. Some of its most remarkable monuments are the Nyatapole, the highest pagoda-style temple in Nepal, the golden gates, and the many temples located around the square.

The “juju dhau,” literally translated to the “King’s curd,” is a special yogurt made by Newars. While you take a stroll around Bhaktapur, be sure to try it.

Chitwan

Chitwan, located in the west of Nepal, is known for its jungle safaris. The Chitwan National Park (CNP) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its buffer zone includes a Ramsar Site — Beeshazari Tal.

Nepal’s Terai is a subtropical region in the south. In the park, there are 68 species of mammals, 544 species of birds, 56 species of herpetofauna, and 126 species of fish. The One-Horned Rhinoceros, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Gharial Crocodile are among the park’s most famous residents.

Besides the beautiful natural biodiversity, Chitwan is also home to the ethnic Tharus. When you are at Chitwan, be sure to visit the Tharu museum and go on walking tours around Tharu villages.

River boating along the Rapti river is also a must-do activity.

For jungle safaris, you can opt for jungle walks with a guide, Jeep safaris, or even elephant rides.

Pokhara-

The lakeside city of Pokhara is a vibe in itself. It has a laid-back attitude which gives you a sense of calm. Boating at the serene Phewa Lake, short hikes to the peace pagoda, paragliding, and ultraflight are some of the many activities this city offers. The lakeside is lively with the many cafes and pubs. You can also browse the curio shops along the length of the lakeside area. One of the many attractions of Pokhara are the limestone caves. If you have time, drive to Begnas Lake.
